The space of a large arena can be used to one's advantage.

Using the environment to break line-of-sight with enemies allows for some breathing room and time to consider target prioritization.

- The Tip of the Day.

CRY FOR THE WEEPER is the first mission of the HERESY layer, and the penultimate mission of Act II. It is bathed in a pervasive red glow and is the closest of the game's environments to conventional depictions of Hell, mainly due to its red color scheme. It is the final test of skill before the battle in [ 6-2: AESTHETICS OF HATE ].

Major Areas[]

Crossroads[]

Just before the Crossroads, a small enclosed arena will be found, containing burning coffins being carried upwards by chains. Two Malicious Faces spawn in the room, with one on either end, and the first instance of a Swordsmachine as a common enemy. A chandelier can also be located at the top of the room, similar to the ones found in [ 5-3: SHIP OF FOOLS ], that can be shot to cause it to fall and crush any enemy it lands on.

Continuing onward will lead to the Crossroads, featuring several burning coffins alongside a gigantic headless skeleton coming out from a fleshy area on the ceiling. A Reusable Checkpoint is located below the skeleton, reactivating after acquiring the Red Skull later on. Upon first entering, only the front door will be accessible.

Blood Column Arena[]

A room full of columns, with a floor made of writhing flesh similar to the Gluttony layer. A dimly lit corridor with red skylights must be traversed beforehand, containing two Filth that attack from the shadows. The room contains four chandeliers, with two aligned on each side of the arena.

Triggering the combat encounter causes the columns to illuminate red with fresh blood and gore, allowing them to be broken. Shattering a blood column will recover 20 HP to the player in a large radius around it.

Initially, six Filth and four Soldiers will spawn. Killing them all will spawn another wave of four Schisms and a Swordsmachine. Killing all Schisms, or damaging the Swordsmachine to its second phase, will spawn four Strays at the outer edges of the room. Beating the encounter unlocks the exit, located up a stairway to the left. A Checkpoint awaits behind the door.

Lava Chasm[]

A room suspended over a pit of lava, with two disconnected bridges connecting to the entrance and exit. A Malicious Face and a Sentry will spawn, alongside two Virtues spawning above either door.

Killing them grants access to the Red Skull in the next room, opening the door back to the Crossroads when taken. The door parallel to it will now be open as well, leading down a long dark hallway to find the Red Pedestal. Placing the skull raises the spike in the middle, allowing access to a dropdown leading to the next area.

City Skyline Arena[]

Dropping down the pit opened by the Red Skull leads to a massive expansive open area outdoors, with a dark upside-down city visible above a fiery-red skyline. Walking down the bridge will lead to the main area, featuring two parallel staircases on either side of an open underpass lined with burning coffins and a single chandelier overhead. A Checkpoint can be found at the end of the bridge as well. A Green Hookpoint can be located above the underpass roof, only enabling once the encounter begins. Two Bounce Pads can also be found underneath the arena.

A door lies ahead, which will begin the encounter when approached; a Cerberus and a Swordsmachine spawn on the roof above the underpass, with two Sentries and eight Filth appearing on the outer edges. Killing all of them spawns a Virtue, four Strays, and two Schisms in front of the door, alongside two Malicious Faces, two Soldiers, and two Streetcleaners on either side of the arena. Another Sentry will also spawn on the far end of the underpass roof.

Chapel[]

A cubic room suspended above lava, with multiple suspended platforms leading upwards. A Checkpoint is placed in a small corridor preceding the room. Two chandeliers can be located inside, with one over each of the side platforms. Inside, a Malicious Face will spawn on the furthest platform leading to the exit, accompanied by two Schisms. Additionally, two Strays and a Soldier will spawn on each side platform.

Elevated Platforms[]

Another outdoors arena, comprised of four platforms connected with breakable chains suspended high up above the skyline leading to the next area, and two Bounce Pads below. A Virtue will spawn in front of the exit, with an Idol protecting it just below.

Each platform leading to the exit spawns enemies; when entering the arena, two Streetcleaners spawn on the first platform alongside two Soldiers on the second. Jumping onto the third platform spawns four Filth and two Schisms, and jumping onto the fourth platform spawns another four Soldiers.

Hall of Sacrilegious Remains[]

After a long window-lit hallway lined with burning coffins, with Gabriel commenting about how he can smell V1's bloodshed, there will be one final indoors arena comprised of several bridges and archways surrounded by a moat of lava. The final Checkpoint is placed just before entering the arena.

At the start, two Hideous Masses will spawn next to each other on an elevated platform. Killing one will spawn four Soldiers and a Swordsmachine, and killing either the second Hideous Mass or the newly spawned enemies will spawn four Strays and two Cerberi. Once done, the Level Exit will open.

Challenge[]

BEAT THE SECRET ENCOUNTER
Right before the drop into the City of Dis, wait for the hole to open up fully, then grab the Red Skull and drop in before it closes. After that, climb on top of the Chapel after the City Skyline Arena and place the Red Skull onto the pedestal. This will trigger a secret boss fight against Sisyphean Insurrectionists Angry & Rude.

Trivia[]

  • The level is named after the Sunn O))) song Cry for the Weeper.
  • The two Filth in the dark hallway to the Blood Column Arena spawn without the portal effect, giving the illusion that they emerged from the darkness.
    • Because of that, they are often missed by players who are moving too fast to see them.
  • This mission, just like [ 3-1: BELLY OF THE BEAST ], features a boss-like fight with multiple enemies in the last room.
    • This is the first level to include Swordsmachine as a common enemy.
    • This is the first non-boss level to not include the Drone since its introduction.
    • This is also the first level to include the Hideous Mass since its introduction.
    • Finally, this is the first level to have multiple dual boss fights.
  • A variety of easter eggs can be located within this level.
    • By wrapping around the outside of the final arena, a character can be found on a balcony. The text "A R M B O Y ! ! !" is displayed on the screen when near, and he is greeted with applause.
      • Armboy is accompanied by a bed, chair, and a readable book that displays "A R M B O Y ! ! !" in very large text.
      • Armboy used to be located on top of the building in which the first half of the level was played. This was changed in the ULTRA_REVAMP update due to the upside down cities being placed in the sky.
    • By using Noclip to reach the very top of the geometry of the final arena past the upside-down city, the text "PENIS! :)" can be seen written on the roof.
  • Like their predecessors Agony & Tundra, the secret fight against Angry & Rude is a reference to Agni & Rudra from Devil May Cry 3.
  • If, after falling down the Red Skull drop, the player stays in the air and lands at the City of Dis Skyline, the music will not play.
  • This level's BGM reuses [ 3-1: BELLY OF THE BEAST ]'s Crescendo Leitmotif due to being near the end of ACT II.
    • Similarly, if one listens closely to the music that plays in the Hall of Sacrilegious Remains, the BGM from [ 1-3: HALLS OF SACRED REMAINS ] can be heard, albeit faint.
  • According to Hakita, the "eerie sounds" in the background of "Chord of the Crooked Saints" are "desert critter ambiance" that has been "slowed down a lot."
  • When standing next to the burning coffins, screams of agony can be heard from within. This is a reference where the heretics were punished by trapped inside the flaming tombs in Dante's Inferno. There are two audio tracks for this, one of a man screaming, the other of a woman sobbing.
