"IS THAT THE BEST YOU'VE GOT?!"

- Gabriel shortly before learning that it was not, in fact, the best he got.

Gabriel, Apostate of Hate is a Supreme Angel, returning for a rematch in [ 6-2: AESTHETICS OF HATE ], where he first acknowledges the Machines' destruction of Hell before facing off against V1 once again. Gabriel is currently one of five characters with speaking roles in ULTRAKILL and is voiced by Gianni Matragrano. Upon his defeat, Gabriel vows to confront the machine once more at a later time, before teleporting away yet again with a beam of light.

Appearance[]

Gabriel is depicted wearing silver armor with golden accents, and his eyeless helmet is embedded with a golden cross. Sky-blue light constructs form both his angel wings and his halo. He also wears ornate twin swords sheathed on his right hip, the scabbards bearing the phrases "Splendor is Justice" and "Justice is Splendor". Unlike his first encounter, Gabriel will use these swords extensively during this fight. During his first phase, Gabriel starts off Enraged with aggressive red colors, before calming down and reverting to his regular color scheme during his second phase.

Combat[]

Gabriel now primarily uses his twin swords to attack the player. These attacks are highly mobile and fast, but they don't track very well. Gabriel's attack structure functions very similarly to his first encounter, though now two of his combos will only trigger at close range instead of just one, and he has no limit on how many pre-combo projectile throws he can perform between taunts. Additionally, he now takes 50% less damage when attacked during his transition between phases.

Gabriel has four attacks, with an extra attack in his second phase on Violent difficulty and above. Between each taunt, Gabriel will string two combo attacks together, with a chance to perform a raw sword throw before each combo. He will not use the same combo attack twice in a row (unless locked out of both of his close range combos), and unlike his previous fight, he has no limit on how many raw sword throws he can perform between taunts.

In his first phase, Gabriel can combine his twin swords horizontally in front of him, before raising them over his head and throwing them at the player. These swords have light tracking, and they can be parried. If these swords miss the player, Gabriel will teleport them back into his hands to throw them again. During his second phase, he will instead manifest light projections of his swords to continue attacking without retracting the real swords, and he will teleport before throwing to make the attack more unpredictable unless his real swords are still active.

Additionally, he may perform a light combo with his swords, starting by reversing his grip on his swords, dashing directly at the player and attacking four times before following it up with a final long-range thrust with both swords. Only the finishing thrust is parryable. During his second phase, he will teleport before the finisher unless his real swords are mid-flight. Gabriel can also perform a medium combo, where he will visibly raise one of his swords in his right hand, swinging it three times and following up with a final dashing, spinning slice with both swords. He will only initiate this combo if the player is in close range, and only the finishing slice is parryable. During his second phase, he will teleport before the finisher unless his real swords are mid-flight.

Finally, Gabriel can perform a heavy combo, where he will rear his swords before cleaving twice with both of them, quickly combining and throwing them with less windup than his raw sword throw. He will only initiate this combo while the player is close, and both swings can be parried alongside the thrown sword itself. During his second phase, he will teleport before throwing unless his real swords are mid-flight.

On Violent difficulty or higher, he will summon a surrounding shield of swords spinning around himself at the start of his second phase, and then every other taunt. These can be parried. On Brutal difficulty, this attack ends with the swords teleporting around the player in a ring, orbiting them for a few moments before briefly pausing and launching inwards.

Terminal Data[]

TYPE: Supreme Angel

DATA:
Having twice clashed with the machine and lost, Gabriel realized he had been mistaken. The strong fire that burned inside him was not hatred at all, but passion.

Gabriel had never before known the joy of a struggle, of coming face-to-face with an opponent of equal or greater measure. Though he had lost twice, each loss only further grew his desire to overcome.

Up until now, he had only done what was expected of him, but now for the first time he had found something he himself wanted. Not even the fast encroaching End of Hell mattered to him anymore.

Still, having come to realize the horrors he had committed in God's name, he felt a great guilt. Though he could not undo what he had done, Gabriel knew he had to make things right, and headed to Hell for the last time.

STRATEGY:
- While Gabriel's speed has increased, his accuracy has not. Dodging diagonally or to the side will prove more fruitful than trying to run backwards out of the range of his swords.

- Though his sword throw may seem impossible to dodge, it will prove an excellent weapon if parried instead.

- Overcome with emotion, Gabriel will sometimes stop to taunt his opponent, creating a window for healing.

Rending Apart[]

Gabriel starts in an Enraged state. He is much faster and his attacks hit much harder while also being just as rapid. One slip-up and Gabriel can easily kill the player in two or three hits. A good way to counteract his rush attacks is to slide off to the side and/or dash before he pulls off his last hit in his combos. If one wants to get cheeky, his single-hit attacks can be parried before he initiates the last attack in his combo strings, but it is recommended to dash into him before doing so, as he can still deal damage.

In a similar fashion to Minos Prime, he tends to be easy to slide away from with certain combos, and impossible to in others. Generally, keep moving erratically and parry when able to, all while using something handy like Shotgun swapping and projectile boosts. Rocket Launcher rockets can be particularly effective, though since Gabriel is not classified as a grounded enemy, double-damage airshots are not possible on him, even during his juggle phase. Freezecharged Freezeframe Rocket Launcher rockets ignore this, making them a good opener to the fight. Note that successfully parrying melee hits will not interrupt them.

Gabriel is a boss that is centered around the parry mechanic, so accurately identifying and responding to his combos, along with hitting his slow homing dual sword projectile, can easily net a victory. It is recommended to move in a straight line once he performs his throw animation and aim the redirect back at him whenever possible. Otherwise, as mentioned, dashing into Gabriel can avoid damage with invulnerability frames while safely bringing the player within range for melee parries.

In his second phase, he will start teleporting during his attacks to misdirect the player. He will also stop teleporting his thrown swords back into his hands upon initiating melee attacks, instead attacking with light construct duplicates of his swords while the sword projectile continues its flight. Gabriel cannot teleport before melee hits while the sword projectile is active, though this restriction does not apply to either of his sword throws.

Shooting Marksman Revolver coins either directly, from behind, or above him with a charged Alternate Piercer Revolver shot or the Electric Railcannon can shred through his health in both phases. Although he's no longer Enraged in his second phase, it does not slow down Gabriel in any way. As usual, the Screwdriver Railcannon can be used as an effective way to keep health up, but it runs the risk of hard damage overwhelming anyone who becomes too reliant on it.

While Gabriel does not take additional damage from the Alternate Nailgun's sawblades like he does from Nailgun nails, it can be easier to passively manipulate Gabriel into sawblade traps rather than nail traps. Consider using nails over sawblades to open the fight, as saws can waste durability hitting terrain before they get a chance to damage Gabriel. Consider making a freezecharged rocket trap for Gabriel, as it does not use the Nailgun's or Alternate Nailgun's ammo and still deals the same amount of damage.

While it is still possible to slide around to dodge Gabriel's attacks, it will not be consistent unless the slides are timed correctly based on Gabriel's attack patterns, forcing players who had relied on mindlessly spamming the slide mechanic in the first fight to properly figure out his patterns here. Despite this, the arena is much larger and has no pitfalls, meaning players may find the rematch easier despite Gabriel's increased speed and power.

Trivia[]

  • Gabriel's second encounter is the only boss in the game to start his fight Enraged and revert to an un-Enraged state upon taking enough damage.
  • There is a sound in the game's files of Gabriel reciting Pingas, a meme within the Youtube Poop community originating from The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.
    • Funnily enough, this Pingas debacle appears to have come full circle, seeing as Gianni has been confirmed to be the voice provider for Satan (ironically) from the Antonball series (most notably the recently released ANTONBLAST), who takes many cues from AOSTH's Robotnik (the one who originally spoke the infamous Pingas line) in terms of personality, design, and even minute details (e.g. rolling his R's).
  • If the player approaches Gabriel before his final pre-fight dialogue completes, he can be seen playing the organ that is initially heard throughout the level.
  • If the player spawns Gabriel and then uses Noclip to go inside a wall, he will begin rapidly teleporting around them. This also works if Enemies Attack Each Other is enabled with Cancerous Rodent spawned.
  • When Gabriel says "I'LL SHOW YOU DIVINE JUSTICE!" and "I'll show you TRUE splendor!", he is most likely referring to his swords with the same name, or just making puns.
  • His support priority rank being -1 might be a reference to him being considered as "unloyal" by The Council after being beaten by V1 during their first fight.
  • If Gabriel is killed in the Sandbox while his swords are still flying around, they will continue to do so until they hit a barrier.
