Not to be confused with Hell (organism)
Hell is a place regarded in various religions as a spiritual realm of evil and suffering, where those whose souls were deemed wicked are punished for all eternity. It is the primary setting of ULTRAKILL, and where the majority of major events in-game take place.
Structure[]
Hell, as a place, is an extradimensional collection of various chaotic planes layered one on top of another, each possessing a different theme and aesthetic in accordance with the sin it embodies. Each layer has its own sky as well as infinite in size, despite being located directly under a different layer; this is because the layers of Hell are abstract concepts of space, rather than actual physical locations. Think of it as an upside down, pain-flavored wedding cake of infinite incomprehensible unsensciecal size and scope.
Hakita has stated that Hell continuously transforms itself so that entrance to the next layer is always located where the player themselves are, which is why no matter the path one may go, it will always be the "right way", V1 is able to use this outside of Hell which is an alternative spacetime, this is supported by Hakita saying that Hell runs on different laws of physics and space than our world.
Hell does not exist in any normal space, though it can be visited and explored. It’s landscapes and natural laws change constantly , which seems to further point toward its chaotic and overall physics-denying nature. At the same time, its completely formless, abstract, and science-denying nature is still not comprehended by humans. Possibly because it is simply far too vast and complex for any living being to truly comprehend.
Hell is also designed to be inescapable for those who have been sent there. For example, V1 is able to freely traverse Hell through a system of elevators, but said elevators are concealed from Husks and are completely inaccessible to them. No soul, once condemned, can ever again flee the Woeful Realm.
Inhabitants[]
Hell is mainly inhabited by the Husks, who are nearly mindless wretches formed from the tormented souls of the damned. Under normal circumstances, they are doomed to suffer eternally for the crimes they committed in life. However, when intelligent enough or led by the right people, they can escape their eternal torture or simply refuse to undergo it.
To prevent this, Angels (specifically, those who came from human souls) are sent down to act as wardens; punishing the rebellious damned with heavenly fire until they resume their respective torments.
There is also a species that exists exclusively in Hell, having never been a living being: the Demons, who are made from the very flesh which Hell is composed of. They seem to exist for the sole purpose of defending Hell and keeping an eye on the damned. They are extremely hostile, and very protective of their natural habitat, to the point where it is nigh impossible to research them safely.
After the discovery of this terrible place and the subsequent exploration of it, certain Machines were sent down to aid humanity with the expeditions. Even though the Hell Exploration and Excavation project has long since ended, some of them are still down there, abandoned and fighting for survival. Yet former scouts aren't the only Machines who reside in the Inferno: deep down, in the 7th layer, machines who were thought to be long extinct dwell and fight each other for all time. It must've really liked the war that brought them into existence.
The Nine Layers of Hell[]
Hell has nine layers, and one main entrance. Each circle has its own unique punishment, growing worse the lower one descends into the realm.
It is very important to note that all punishments in Hell are meant to be ETERNAL.
Prelude: THE MOUTH OF HELL[]

[Main article: Category:Prelude]
While it may not be an actual layer of Hell, it serves as a vestibule to the Kingdom of eternal woe.
Somewhere in the past, humanity discovered the Mouth of Hell, and began to work there in an effort to understand the Woeful Realm. They built massive facilities filled with mines, lights, and futuristic power tools so that they might uncover all they could. It is clear that something related to Hell was once excavated here, perhaps minerals or even raw Hell-mass.
In the present age, it is abandoned, with twisted creatures and animated statues standing guard at the former site of mankind’s beachhead.
Despite its desolate state, the tools and machinery within these facilities remains perfectly functional. The drills and fans are still spinning, destroying whatever may come into physical contact with them. The power crushers pulverize whatever they can, the round heaters melt and scorch the processed matter delivered unto them by the still-running conveyor belts. The molten substance that results from the automated labor then flows into the deepest parts of the factory.
And in those deepest sections of the facility stands the Gate of Hell, shut firmly, waiting to be opened once again.
Layer I: LIMBO[]

[Main article: Category:Limbo]
Punishment: Isolation from Heaven and the mental torment that comes with it
The first proper layer of Hell. It is the abode of those deemed too vile for salvation, but too pure for actual damnation.
Limbo is, for lack of a better term, a significantly off-brand version of Paradise. The skies surrounding the area are merely projection screens, the fountains, rivers, waterfalls, and lakes that flow through this illusion of Heaven are mere holograms, the sound of the wildlife originates from speakers hidden poorly away from sight , and the very trees, plants and butterflies are fake. Even the stained windows lighting and decorating the redundant churches are merely holograms.
The main punishment in Limbo, however, is complete isolation in a fake world, mocking you for your disbelief. Souls condemned to this layer are driven mad from their solitude and even given the keys to take the plunge deeper into Hell. The choice is clear: either painfully yearn for a paradise that will never come for all eternity, or journey deeper, and taste the balm of pain…
Layer II: LUST[]

[Main article: Category:Lust]
Punishment: Blown about by a powerful storm's winds for eternity
The second layer of Hell, created for all who let their passions and sexual desires control their lives and actions.
The pinkish skies of this layer are filled with unrelenting stormy winds, which buffeted the unfortunate damned back and forth with no hope of rest in previous ages.
There was once a time, though, where there was a sliver of hope for a peaceful eternity for the denizens of Lust. This was the Lust Renaissance, which was started by the former Judge of Hell, Minos. This brief period of relief was ended by Gabriel, who mercilessly struck him down, took his title, and sealed his soul away, while infesting his decaying vessel with Parasites. What remains of the once great city of Lust is now dilapidated, empty, and crumbling under a lack of maintenance.
Layer III: GLUTTONY[]

[Main article: Category:Gluttony]
Punishment: Dissolved in acid and flesh
The third layer of Hell. It is intended for the Husks of the gluttonous, a name given to those who selfishly indulged in food, drink, substances and luxuries, leaving no regard for the well-being of themselves or others.
The inmates of this circle spend their eternity being eternally digested alive in a confinement of organs, eyes, and many other viscera.
The soul of Minos wound up here, trapped in a strange construct of flesh in the deepest and darkest pits of Gluttony, forced to watch his mindless corpse wreck everything that had been erected under his great and prosperous rule, vainly swearing to avenge his people.
Layer IV: GREED[]

[Main article: Category:Greed]
Punishment: Carrying heavy weights up mankind's monuments
The fourth layer of Hell, populated by those who hoarded and squandered wealth and riches with little to no self control.
The only layer of Hell with a visible sun, which heats up the golden dunes beneath so much that any Husk that has not adapted to said heat immediately catches fire upon contact with it. All of the great monuments of mankind decorate the gilded desert, most of them half-buried in the golden dust.
The greedy Husks carry big, heavy boulders up these monuments. Some of them have done this for so long that they have even evolved to suit it better.
This punishment is best observed by looking towards the Sisyphean Insurrectionists who are now left hauling heavy boulders up monuments of mankind's arrogance. They once were warriors, fighting against Heaven for their freedom during a great Insurrection, led by Ephyra's founder and former king Sisyphus, all with the intent to further spite the divine ones like he had in his previous life. Unsurprisingly, the uprising was crushed by the angels, and the King's corpse now hangs in one of the many pyramids in Greed as a reminder of what happens to those who seek to stand up against Heaven's reign.
Layer V: WRATH[]
Screenshot taken of the raging Ocean Styx (You do not recognize the bodies in the water)
[Main article: Category:Wrath]
Punishment: Fight for air or drown eternally in The Abyss
The fifth layer of Hell. For those who gave in to their bitter, wrathful tendencies, either externally or internally.
While there are facilities similar to those in Lust somewhere in Wrath, most of the layer is taken by what was once the River Styx, now an overflown ocean. A few traces of what Wrath once was can be seen peaking out of the water's surface, but even they will soon sink beneath the Styx' waters.
The waters tremble endlessly under the broiling of the sinners, fighting one another for an ever-shrinking spot on the surface for air. Then there are those who have given up on such endeavors, referred to as The Sullen. They sink to the bottom of the former river, now so deep that no natural light can reach it. Here they lay still and drown eternally in relative peace, eventually being fused together by the Leviathan.
Layer VI: HERESY[]
Screenshot taken of the smoldering capitol (as seen in P-2)
[Main article: Category:Heresy]
Punishment: Harvested and burned alive
The sixth layer of Hell is the house and home of those who practiced and spread false beliefs and religions.
Being the first of four remaining layers encompassing the infernal City of Dis, Heresy appears as a vast Victorian-era metropolis, filled with towers, giant buildings, and even normal city features such as benches and garbage cans, all tinted in a blood-red color. Demonic imagery can be seen on most of the buildings, mocking the sinners for their heresy, and what is presumably the minced flesh of sinners crammed between the foundations. In the city skyline one can see the sky being orange like fire, while from below, nothing can be seen except blood red darkness and an endless rain of stale blood.
Sinners here are tightly packed up in either flaming coffins, or cauldrons of boiling blood and harvested alive, while seared by the passive, scalding heat from the lava and embers.
The heretics are not the only ones contained here, though. Locked away far below the city is a gigantic prison complex, holding the soul of Sisyphus and his soldiers within. The former is contained in a living prison of flesh and skin in the center of the complex overseeing his helpless followers while the fallen warlord slumbers within. There will be a day, though, when Sisyphus will awaken from his sleep. And then, he will rain down hell upon the heavens with glee.
Layer VII: VIOLENCE[]
[Main article: Category:Violence]
Punishment: Several
The seventh layer of Hell. It is the final destination of those who, while alive, sought nothing more than to inflict harm. This horrible place is subdivided into three individual circles, each holding a different category of violent malefactors: those being the murderous, the suicidal, and the blasphemous respectively.
Garden of Forking Paths[]
Punishment: Get lost, then torn apart and forced into Mannequins
Screenshot taken of the ashy world
The entrance to Violence and its three circles is predominantly white in color. The grassy plains, the trees, the marble buildings within it, all white. All acts of aggression are highlighted in this colorless environment.
While it may serve as an entrance, the labyrinth is not to be used as an exit. The long halls, similar enough to grant no sense of direction to escapees but just different enough to grant no sense of familiarity, will exhaust the foolish sinners and leave them vulnerable to a fate even worse than their original punishment. The only escape these fools have is to be crushed by the labyrinth's rampant Minotaur.
Circle I: Violence Against Neighbors[]
Screenshot taken of the War Without Reason
Punishment: Boiling alive in the River Phlegethon, or being forced to endure the desolation of war.
The first circle of Violence holds the murderers, tyrants, and all those who would gladly take another life. It contrasts with the peaceful nature of the Garden of Forking Paths, being a never ending re-enactment of the war to end all wars. The waters of Phlegethon, a river primarily composed of scalding blood, flow through this circle while the surrounding terrain consists of piles of bodies.
The condemned spend the rest of their existence stewing in the River Phlegethon, while the less fortunate forever experience the horrors of war. War is hell, and Hell is war.
Circle II: Violence Against Self[]
Screenshot taken of the gloomy woods
Punishment: Turned into pain-ridden tree
The second circle of Violence is reserved for those who gave in to despair and took their own lives. Neither Heaven nor Hell cares under what circumstances this desperate deed had been done; the victims of suicide gain no compassion or mercy. It is a dark and sinister wood, populated by twisted trees that bear an uncanny resemblance to tormented men.
The suicides are denied a vessel of flesh and instead reincarnate as those grotesque trees, forced to endure everlasting pain as their bodies squirm and cramp. These fallen souls can only scream in their torment, as they are trapped in these useless forms that are only capable of suffering.
They denied the body God gave them, so they shall never have one again.
Circle III: Violence Against God, Art, and Nature[]
Screenshot taken of the barren hellscape
Punishment: Stretched supine upon the burning sand, run in circles, or crouch huddled and weeping
The third and final circle of Violence is the dwelling of the blasphemers, sodomites, and usurpers. It is a vast plain of sand, scorched by great flakes of flame descending slowly from the sky, inflicting much torment to the evildoers trapped here.
The unlucky may come face to face with one of the many Earthmovers dwelling within this glade of sand, blasphemous creations who sow death and destruction among their own kind.
Layer VIII: FRAUD (!)[]
[Main article: Category:Fraud]
Punishment: Unknown
The eighth layer of Hell, a place which is to be inherited by those who broke the very bonds of love and trust with their foul, deceitful ways.
Fraud was first showcased at PC Gaming Show in 2025. The reveal shows that the layer constantly bends itself into a cylinder, with the layer itself containing modern penthouses, skyscrapers, rectangular parks, and manors. The layer uses Non-Euclidean geometry, however the actual punishment remains unknown.
Layer IX: TREACHERY (!)[]
[Main article: Category:Treachery]
Punishment: Unknown
The ninth and final layer of Hell is the eternal resting place of the oath-breakers, backstabbers, and traitors. It is also the prison of Lucifer, who'd questioned God's creation of Hell and was cast into it in His grief and anguish born of the angel's inquiry.
Nothing is known about Treachery, as it has yet to be released.

Trivia[]
- ULTRAKILL's Hell is obviously based on Dante's Inferno. This means that Hell will NOT have a layer for the deadly sins of Envy, Sloth and Pride, as those are confined to Dante's Purgatorio.
