Encore Levels[]
Encore levels are a planned feature that remixes campaign levels with alternate enemy placements. Unlike other character action games where more difficult enemy placements are typically exclusive to higher difficulties, Encore levels will be toggleable independently from difficulty settings, allowing players who dislike the mechanical changes of higher difficulties to still play with the advanced enemy placements and players who dislike the advanced placements to still play with the higher difficulty mechanics. Radiant enemies are planned to appear in Encore levels.
Level Editor[]
An official level editor by PITR, codenamed "Tundra", is currently in development and closed testing, in conjunction with a fork of ULTRAKILL with the ability to open custom maps, codenamed "Agony". Due to the inherent instability of a codebase in active development, it will not see a public release until ULTRAKILL is complete. An update to this editor, codenamed "Rude", is currently released and can have access requested, alongside a public level loader codenamed "Angry".
Trivia[]
- Similarly to how Devil May Cry alludes to Dante's Divine Comedy, ULTRAKILL's levels are based on the "Nine circles of Hell" described in Inferno.
- Many level names are references to musical acts (e.g. the level [ 4-2: GOD DAMN THE SUN ] is a reference to the Swans' song of the same name): see the respective level pages.
- Every layer seems to share a pattern. The first and second level introduces new enemies, the third level is a gauntlet that tests you with everything you have encountered up to that layer, and the final level is the boss fight. Lust, for whatever reason, doesn't follow this pattern, the "gauntlet" level being the first, and the latter two introducing enemies instead.
- If you get out of bounds and fall into the void at any point, the game will spawn you back to the last room you were in with the message "Whoops, sorry about that."
- As of The Wait of The World update, P-2 has by far the highest style requirements, needing an incredible 36,000 points for a P-Rank.
- 1-4 has the lowest style requirement, only needing a measly 600 points for a P-Rank.
- The skybox of each level and cyber grind is constantly rotating with the exception being 7-3 where the sky box doesn't rotate.
- The entrance to a normal level is red, while secret levels are black, and prime levels, silver.
- Missions and Prime Sanctums unlocked at a higher difficulty are also made available on all difficulties below it, to make switching to an easier difficulty more convenient for players who have made progress before realizing the difficulty is too high for them. Secret levels, on the other hand, are unlocked for all difficulties at once upon discovery, though their corresponding Act pages must be accessible first.
- The Tundra level editor uses the ".cum" file extension, which is an abbreviation of "Custom ULTRAKILL Map".
- The codenames of level editor "Tundra" and custom map loader fork "Agony" are references to Swordsmachines "Agony" and "Tundra".
- Despite the work on the custom map loader "Agony" being not well known, it still remains in the games code, making references to Steam Workshop calls and level loading by the methods AgonyController and AgonyHelper.
- Through external programs, the button to access the level editor can be made to display. Clicking on this button causes an unfinished UI to display, before closing. Subsequent button-clicking does nothing.
- The Prelude has the least amount of songs played compared to the other layers, with only 3.
