The Leviathan is a Supreme Demon, making its debut in [ 5-4: LEVIATHAN ]. It is also responsible for flipping and sinking the ferry during [ 5-3: SHIP OF FOOLS ]. It is an incredibly long, titanic sea serpent capable of high-speed lunges, tail swipes, and mass projectile fire.
Appearance[]
Like the Hideous Mass, the Leviathan appears with many sculptured faces and bodies, albeit in the shape of a colossal sea serpent. Its head appears to look like an unusual humanoid protrusion with four arms on top of the jaw, its back is lined with arms in place of what's supposed to be its spine, and the underbelly is lined with what can be assumed to be the faces of the sullen who've contributed themselves to the Leviathan's evermore increasing length.
A flayed, constantly-screaming humanoid serves as the Leviathan's "heart", appearing behind the demon's head. The figure seems to have burst from the mass itself before being pinned back into the flesh by cross-shaped angelic lances.
Combat[]
The boss has a very straightforward design, but it will test the player on how good they are at dealing with distractions. It has three total phases; during its first phase, it will occasionally prepare a lunge attack, where it will retract itself backwards before swiftly traveling forward. This attack can be parried, and will temporarily stun the Leviathan upon doing so. It may also begin firing a large amount of Hell Energy projectiles from its mouth, shooting regular projectiles in a spiral pattern with occasional explosive projectiles coming from the center.
Finally, the Leviathan can occasionally duck underneath the water before resurfacing its tail for two tail swipes, with the tail either going high enough to duck underneath or low enough to jump over. After swiping its tail, it will fully rise up from the water in a new position. During its second phase, its attacks remain the same, with the exception of it being able to perform its tail swipe attack at any moment without needing to submerge itself first. Despite this, it will still submerge to reposition itself elsewhere.
Once the Leviathan reaches its third phase, it will begin to dive underneath the water, before completely destroying the boat that serves as the platform for the fight, replacing it with a circling ring of its own body mass around itself. Some of its attacks remain the same in this phase, with the difference being it may also charge up a giant beam attack from its mouth, circling the beam around its body with increasing speed for the player to jump over in order to dodge its damage. Once the Leviathan is done using its beam, it will be disoriented for a few seconds before attacking again. Its Hell Energy projectile attack will also be changed from simply firing at the player to instead leading its shots ahead of the player's movement.

TYPE: Supreme Demon
DATA:
Unlike most demons, the Leviathan is not formed from generic Hell Mass, but instead from the bodies of the Sullen, a name used for those in the Ocean Styx who have given up fighting for air and instead lay at the bottom of the ocean, drowning eternally. The Sullen, in their motionlessness, were eventually fused together by the same force that created the other demons, becoming the biblical Leviathan, an abomination prophesied to be at the end of the world.
The heart, which houses the souls of the Sullen in endless anguish as their flesh, veins and nerves writhe and mutate, attempted to escape its body, but Gabriel struck it down with his divine spears, pinning it back onto its head, unable to move.
Although the world ended, the Leviathan remains trapped in the Ocean Styx, growing ever longer as more of Wrath's sinners give up and sink to the bottom.
STRATEGY:
- The Leviathan's heart is exposed on top of its head, making it a clear weakpoint to aim for. Although it's usually not visible, it can be seen after the Leviathan's attacks, opening an opportunity for direct damage, or for landing a magnet.- Although ill-advised, it is possible to ride the Leviathan for a short period of time. A well-timed jump will allow one to dodge the Leviathan's bite attack as well as land on its head near its exposed heart.
- The tail will either swing high or low, and the height of the swing can be determined by the direction in which the swing rotates.
Rending Apart[]
Shooting explosives into the mouth while it is firing projectiles does heavy damage. The Malicious Railcannon especially inflicts the most severe burst damage, but the Rocket Launcher is more reliable. The projectiles fired by the Leviathan can be parried, but this is risky due to the projectiles being slightly spread out. It is also possible to Whiplash towards the Leviathan's mouth and parry its projectiles point-blank for serious damage.
If one is willing to risk it, jumping onto the Leviathan will allow serious chunks of damage to be dished out due to close proximity to its heart. Just try not to stay on for too long, as it's easy to get thrown off or be plunged into the water with it. Using the Whiplash works, but doing so is risky. A somewhat reliable way to damage the heart consistently without riding the Leviathan is to use Marksman Revolver coins to ricoshot it, as its coins will always target the heart, even going as far as to shoot through its body to reach it.
While on top of the Leviathan, Attractor Nailgun magnets can be shot onto its heart, quickly followed by the Overheat Nailgun's intense burst fire to quickly lower its health. The Leviathan also has a chance to be struck by lightning while there are magnets, nails, or Screwdriver Railcannon drills attached to it, dealing 30 damage if lightning strikes the Leviathan's body or a full 90 damage if the lightning strikes the heart directly.
Using the Sharpshooter Revolver right as the Leviathan uses its projectile attack can remove almost half its health in one go due to its charged shot exploding any projectile it hits, which also gives a lot of style points due to the reflected projectiles.
During its second phase and onward, the Leviathan and its tail will become active simultaneously, which will try to divert the player's attention from one or the other. The best way to describe this phase is that the tail often serves in an attempt to distract the player. As long as the high and low swings can be quickly determined, they can easily be ignored to instead focus on the actual Leviathan itself. Also, taking advantage of the Freezeframe Rocket Launcher's rockets for vertical mobility can make getting on top of the Leviathan a trivial effort to land massive damage. It might not seem like it, but the underside of the Leviathan is unarmored, allowing constant damage to be dealt without waiting for it to attack.

Trivia[]
- In its third phase, standing still on the Leviathan's body can cause most of the projectiles it spits out to miss, because the body is slowly rotating.
- Blind Enemies will interrupt two of the three attacks the Leviathan can use.
- If it's initiating a lunge, Blind Enemies will always cause it to attack down the middle section of the platform.
- When firing its projectile barrage, Blind Enemies will immediately cancel it and force it into its "cooldown" state.
- During the first phase of the fight, it will never perform a tail swing when switching sides or positions when repeatedly toggling Blind Enemies on and off. If it does use a tail swing, toggling Blind Enemies during the attack will not stop it.
- Prior to the ULTRA_REVAMP Update changed how it works, the Leviathan's lunge attack was marked as unparryable. Despite this, there was actually a very tiny frame-long window where the attack could be parried, although it wouldn't negate the attack.
- The reason the attack was marked as unparryable is due to Hakita initially wanting to make it parryable, but it was marked as unparryable due to being impossibly fast.[1]
- The Leviathan, and The Corpse of King Minos, are only enemies that offer the [+DOWN TO SIZE] Style Bonus.
- The heart's face on top of the Leviathan's head always has a pair of hands clutched onto its cheeks, resembling the popular painting known as "The Scream".
- The heart can also be heard endlessly screaming when near it, bolstering the reference.
- Any of the Leviathan's segments, aside from its skull, can be grappled onto using the Whiplash.
- The Leviathan's model is 44 segments long in-game.
- When inspected using Noclip, most of the model is not animated during the fight. When it dives below the surface, it teleports to the other side of the platform.
- Spawning Mindflayers and making them fight the Leviathan is prone to crashing the game.
- The "tail" that appears throughout the Leviathan fight is another Leviathan model, as is the platform in its third phase.
- With Blind Enemies toggled on, the model remains fully static under the water.
- This second Leviathan interestingly lacks the same damage modifiers when the player shoots its heart.
- The third Leviathan cannot take any damage, except for its heart, which also lacks the damage modifiers.
- The two extra Leviathans share the same health bar as the primary one.
- Leviathan's projectiles deal only half the usual friendly fire damage, both for projectiles reflected back at itself and for projectiles that hit other enemies.
- The Leviathan is 386m long in the game files.
- Despite this, the Leviathan is a Size 1 fish.
- The Leviathan's design may or may not be a reference to the Frontispiece of the 1651 book "Leviathan" by Thomas Hobbes, due to the Frontispiece being a figure created of hundreds of humans put together which is similar to the Leviathan being constructed of thousands of sullen. Though the likelihood of this being an intentional reference is rather low.
- The Leviathan is a reference to the biblical sea serpent of the same name.
- The Terminals referring to the Leviathan as "biblical" seems to imply that the Bible does, in fact, exist in ULTRAKILL's world
