Description[]
The Nailgun is the third base weapon acquired in ULTRAKILL, found next to a bed of flowers in a castle interior in [ 1-1: HEART OF THE SUNRISE ]. It appears to be a dark-gray handheld minigun equipped with twin sets of 8 rotating barrels, which seem to be supplied with ammunition from a drum magazine. Near the base of the barrel assemblies are highlights that glow the color of the current variant.
Its primary fire shoots a rapid-fire barrage of nails that embed themselves into enemies, suitable for sustained damage at midrange; its high power but limited resources encourage its use in bursts during weapon swap combos to take down both groups of fodder and high-health priority targets.
The Alternate Nailgun is the second secret alternate weapon in ULTRAKILL, found in a locked tomb in [ 4-4: CLAIR DE SOLEIL ], for which the secret to entering is closely guarded in another tomb in the Greed layer. Instead of a dark-gray minigun loaded with nails, it is a silver and brown crossbow loaded with circular sawblades.
The Alternate Nailgun's primary fire shoots a barrage of saws, which are more damaging than nails and can pierce enemies and ricochet off surfaces, though in exchange for a lower rate of fire and even more limited resources. Their chaotic behavior lends them more to crowd control and area denial than direct, sustained single-target damage. The modified behavior of its variants follow suit, allowing for more robust traps that are faster to deploy at the expense of nails' unique properties and damage bonuses against certain enemies.
The Nailgun can be customized with color presets unlocked by collecting Soul Orbs or with a custom color scheme option purchasable with 1,000,000P. Color schemes are saved separately for stock and alternate weapon models, and purchasing the custom color option for one unlocks it for both.
Types of Nailguns[]
- Attractor Nailgun (Blue) - A Nailgun that can deploy up to 3 Magnets at a time to manipulate the movement of nails.
- Overheat Nailgun (Green) - A Nailgun that builds up heat as it fires, which can be released for an incredibly fast burst of fiery nails at the cost of a slowly-recharging heatsink.
- JumpStart Nailgun (Red) - Nailgun that conducts electricity along a wire and shocks enemies.
- Sawblade Launcher (Alternate)- The alternate version of the Nailgun, firing circular sawblades that are not as effective in direct use against single targets as nails, but better at traps and crowd control.
Terminal Data[]
DATA:
A combination of parts from an industrial nailgun and an old bullet gun. Most likely engineered by a machine that was built for construction work, as all machines, even those not built for war, had to learn to fend for themselves after the extinction of mankind.Bullet guns were largely abandoned after the invention of infinite ammunition systems such as electric weapons and heat weapons, largely due to how much cheaper not having to buy ammunition for large-scale armies becomes overtime.
Although the original ammunition system made it useless and largely abandoned, this gun was still excellently designed and built, so with some retrofitting of parts from an industrial nailgun, it has become a rapid-fire projectile weapon with practically infinite metal ammunition.
As is to be expected from an improvised weapon though, its design is far from perfect. As the nail regeneration system was not designed to work at such a high rate, it's liable to overheat if a hard rate limit isn't set on it, though some variants have instead opted for built-in heatsinks.
STRATEGY:
- Due to the nature of its limited ammunition, the nailgun is best used in short bursts rather than extended periods of time.- The Magnet variation's magnets will also affect the nails from other nailgun variations, allowing the bypassing of otherwise limiting factors such as the burst from the Overheat variation having poor accuracy.
- Some enemies, such as Malicious Faces, are generally weak to nails, and in particular the higher quality nails from the hard-limited Magnet variation will decimate most weak foes.
ADVANCED STRATEGY:
- Nails become embedded in enemies, causing some special effects. Electric weapons will receive a damage boost from hitting an enemy that has nails in it, and with enough nails, light enemies become magnetized and pulled by the Magnet variation's magnets, allowing for easy temporary disabling of durable light enemies.- The speed of the barrels' spin carries over between variations, meaning shooting even once with the Magnet variation gives maximum heat for the Overheat variation, allowing for an instant full overheat burst.

Trivia[]
- If the nailgun pickup is skipped in [ 1-1: HEART OF THE SUNRISE ], it will instead appear on a bush in [ 1-2: THE BURNING WORLD ], right in front of the elevator exit.
- So far, the Nailgun is the weapon that has seen the most balance changes throughout ULTRAKILL's development.
- The Nailguns generate their projectiles from iron harvested from whatever particulate is available, usually the blood that V1 collects.[1]
- Gibbed limbs that have nails in them will flail around violently and disappear when you get close.
- Even though nails can bounce on surfaces, they become non-damaging after the first bounce.
