Providence is a Lesser Angel that first appears in the mission [ 8-1: HURTBREAK WONDERLAND ]. They are a flying enemy who shoots magenta beams in a cross pattern.
Appearance[]
Providence appears as an image of a gilded white square that emits an rainbow aura that’s encasing a pure golden eye symbol, with six pearly white translucent butterfly wings around it and six smaller butterfly wings, making the total count of wings twelve. These wings will rotate when Providence is attacking and they’re otherwise fluttering together. It is rumored to look as flat as it does because V1's processors cannot handle its true appearance.
AKA the "Flying JPEG" by YouTube comments. (They aren't wrong...)
Combat[]
From what has been revealed, Providence shoots magenta beams in a cross shape parallel to its eye. Such beams can't be dashed through, as instructed in [ 7-4: ...LIKE ANTENNAS TO HEAVEN ]. These beams originate from a single magenta hell orb. Upon death, Providence leaves a white hookpoint behind themselves.
Trivia[]
- The Providence's abstract design seemed to be based on the idea of “biblically accurate” angels, just like Virtues.
- The "biblically accurate" angel that The Providence is inspired by, would be the Seraph.
- Providence is currently the only enemy to not be a 3D model (excluding the hostile Gianni Matragrano portraits in the Developer Museum, which are non-canon Easter eggs that use the Filth AI and meant to be humorous in nature). Instead, the Providence uses a technique known as 'Billboard Rendering', wherein a sprite is made to face the camera at all times. Another example of this technique being applied is seen with many of the circular enemies in Super Mario 64, and is even seen with the Nextbots (NPCs that are mainly made up of a single image) that are made for Garry's Mod.
- Providence is one of the seven non-machine enemies to possess eye(s), the others being The Corpse of King Minos, Sisyphus Prime, Flesh Prison, Flesh Panopticon, and Mysterious Druid Knight (& Owl)
- The image part of the Providence is first hinted in the soundtrack preview of [ 8-1: HURTBREAK WONDERLAND ], with both having the same eye.
- Providences design seems to be based off of insects and flowers and was shown with a multitude of insect wings in the concept art.
